It's a long overdue entry for the snap fit category of the Back to Basic group build. I'll have to think twice if I'm gonna do another round of snap fit.
Joined the group build with the challenge to see if I could make something with only sanding, top coat, and Real Touch Marker for the realistic effect, just like how the Dengeki Hobby and Hobby Japan magazine do. Turns out that it's not that easy at all.
The first problem that I faced with this build is with the flat coat, where it frosted on most of the parts due to the reason that I've been hastily spraying it with the spray can, which I should have done is to spray it layer by layer and waiting for each layer to dry first before spraying the next layer (as with the instruction on the spray can itself).
The second problem is with the surface of the parts being covered with my oily sweat while I was trying to rush it to finish on time. Ended up I need to clean them but still very problematic. So really cannot rush thing.
The third problem is with the decal because I'm using the marking decal (sticker type) that comes with the kit. Tried to trim the edge as much as possible, but as the result of that, it's not sticking well enough. So it shows how NOOB I am with sticker application.
The last problem, which is quite a critical one, the inner frame of the right leg is near to breaking. I have done the necessary thing like making sure that it could bend smoothly, scribed most of the surface from the join as much as possible to reduce friction, applied some super glue at the possible breaking point, but still doesn't work. That's the reason why I didn't do much poses with this kit due to that reason.
This is how I build this kit:
1. Scribed all the panel lines with a design knife or a chisel.
2. Removed all the mold lines from the part by either sanding (400 -> 800 -> 1000 -> 1200 -> 1500 -> 2000), or scribing it off with a ceramic knife/design knife.
3. Washed all the parts with ultrasonic cleaner.
4. Assembled each body parts separately.
5. Did the panel line with a mechanical pencil (the Mr Hobby mechanical pencil).
6. Applied marking decal (trimmed).
7. Sprayed top coat (Mr Color Super Clear Flat spray can).
8. Touched up with Mr Color Real Touch Gundam Marker.
The whole purpose of using the Real Touch marker is to see whether I could do shading with it. Although I failed, it's possible to achieve that effect, but will have to spend sometimes to experiment with it further.
Conclusion, snap fit ain't that easy after all.
