This is the kit that I got from Ray last year. Started to build this kit since December 2012, and only managed to get it completed last Tuesday. Pictures first.
First of all, sorry for the pictures quality. I think that my camera doesn't really works well under those lighting setup (more like I really don't know how to use it actually T_T).
Anyway, this car kit from Fujimi is based on the You're Under Arrest anime series, more precisely the movie version of the Honda Today (a tuned mini patrol car that has nitro installed as well). Included in this kit is the 1/24 scale of Honda Mini Compo and the 2 resin figures of the 2 main characters: Tsujimoto Natsumi and Kobayakawa Miyuki. It was through this You're Under Arrest series that I got myself interested in certain types of cars and motorbikes.
This is the first time that I really work on a car kit, so it really took me a while to get used to the process. So here's the break down of what I've done. Note that these are all that I could remember, as for the actual work itself, there are a lot more that I've done, which I could not remember clearly what I've done:
Car:
1. Sanded the car cover and re-scribed some lines that were not really in shape.
2. Cut out the hole in the air intake duct above the bonnet, and put a pla-plate at the bottom to create the feel of "there's an air intake duct" there, instead of faking it with painting.
3. Covered most of the internal & exterior parts that have visible holes.
4. Primed with Mr Surfacer 1200 -> sanded with 1000 grit -> Mr Suracer 1200 again -> sanded with 1000 grit again. This process repeated a few times until I was satisfy with the necessary surface fixes.
5. Primed again with Mr White Base 1000 -> water sanded with 1500 grit -> primed again with Mr White Base 1000 -> water sanded with 1500 grit again. This process also has been repeated a few times until I thought that the white base color was good enough for the actual painting.
6. Painted a few layers of Mr Color GX White, and Mr Color GX Black for the black stripes.
7. Compounded the painted surface.
8. Put on the water slide decal.
9. Painted with clear coat. Started with mist coat and then a wet coat. The clear coat was mixed with a little bit of Mr Retarder during the wet coat process.
10. Compounded the coated car cover (with Tamiya coarse compound -> Tamiya fine compound).
11. Finishing up with the rest of the parts' painting.
Bike:
1. Fit the parts together and did the necessary works i.e. cover up seam lines.
2. Painted it with Mr Color GX White, Gaia Notes Semi Gloss Black, custom mixed silver color, and Tamiya Enamel Flat Black for the tyre.
3. Put on decal.
Figures:
1. Fit the parts together (only the pony tail of Miyuki).
2. Sanded the figures with 3M sponge.
3. Covered the bubbles holes and fixing some flaws with either super glue or the thick black glue from Wave, or with Mori Mori polyester putty.
4. Primed the figures with Mr Primer Surfacer 1000.
5. Checked for errors and fixed them -> prim again with Primer Surface 1200.
6. Paint the figures:
Flesh - Mr Color Flesh (custom mixed with Mr Color Character Yellow and Mr Color Fluorescent Orange and Gaia Notes Semi Gloss White), Mr Color.
Uniform - Mr Color Intermediate Blue + Mr Color Blue + Gaia Notes Flat White
Skirt - Mr Color Midnight Blue + Mr Color Blue
Hair - Gaia Notes Flat Black -> Gaia Notes Flat Black + some white
Eyes - Mr Color Red Madder + Mr Color Character Yellow to come out with the brown color, then mixed with some white to if necessary.
Gloves & lanyard - Gaia Notes Flat White
Shoes - Gaia Notes Semi Gloss Black.
Now as for the display setup, I intended to have it reminiscent a scene from the anime's first opening sequence. The base is contributed by Ray, so really appreciate him for that..
Base:
1. The grass field is done using Woodland Scenic grass, and then painted with different tones of green, by mixing between Mr Color Bright Green, Mr Color Yellow and Mr Color Character White.
2. The base of the grass field section before covered by the grass is pre-coated with Mr Surfacer 500 -> primed with Mr Surfacer 1000 -> painted with Mr Color Bright Green (with different color tone as well, but not visible after putting on the grass later).
3. The bricks road is done by scribing the lines of the bright roads. Then, painted with the mixture of Mr Color Red Madder + Mr Color Character Yellow + Mr Color White + Gaia Notes Semi Gloss Black -> Washed with Tamiya Enamel Flat Black.
4. Dry brushed on the brick roads with Mr Color Orange and it's different tone.
5. Finally flat coat the base.
During the process, I made quite a lot of mistakes, hence it's taking a longer time to build as I was trying to rectify those problems. Although I did comment before to some that "it's harder than building a PG...", yet I still find it enjoyable and would love to build another car kit if time allowed.
Lastly, here's the first opening song of the anime, with the scene that I got the idea from for the setup.
